Benjamin returned from a trip to the west. On my return i found your book.I completed the manuscript on your poems and life. I'll sent so you can see and make adjustments. I'm sending it to your Staten Island and Brooklyn address. I would like it back soon so it can be in the March Arena.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
